The U.S. cannabis industry is expected to grow by $50 billion in the next ten years, with an estimated $5 billion in tax revenue for states and federal government. With legalization on the horizon, Amazon has decided to support it by offering discounts on legal cannabis products.
Amazon has decided to support the federal legalization of cannabis. The company will now sell products that are legal in some states, while still selling items that are illegal in other states.
Amazon stated in June 2021 that marijuana will be excluded from their thorough pre-employment drug screening procedure for unregulated jobs (e.g., positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation). Former workers and candidates who were previously dismissed or delayed due to random or pre-employment marijuana tests have now been reinstated.
Amazon stated on September 21, 2021 that it will support the government legalization of cannabis.
According to Amazon’s news release:
We made these adjustments for a variety of reasons. First, we realized that a growing number of states are heading toward some kind of cannabis legalization, making it challenging to establish a nationwide pre-employment marijuana testing program that is equal, consistent, and fair. Second, according to publicly accessible national statistics, pre-employment marijuana testing disproportionately affects persons of color and serves as a barrier to employment. Third, Amazon’s rapid expansion means we’re constantly on the lookout for excellent new team members, and we’ve seen that removing cannabis pre-employment testing helps us to broaden our candidate pool.
Given our previous support for federal cannabis legalization, as well as expunging certain criminal records and investing in impacted businesses and communities, Amazon recently announced its support for the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021 and began actively lobbying for it (MORE Act).
